Chocolate Power Smoothie
Who doesn't like chocolate! This smoothie is not only indulgent, but also quite healthy!
Raw cacao, like the one found in this recipe is bursting with a variety of health promoting benefits, as it's un-processed which ensures it retains all of its nutrients and raw enzymes, unlike its counterpart cocoa which has hardly any health promoting benefits left due to it being processed!
As well as being rich in the minerals magnesium, iron, potassium, calcium, zinc, copper and manganese, raw cacao is also high in antioxidants including resveratrol, a potent antioxidant also found in red wine, so if like me you don't indulge in alcohol raw cacao offers a great alternative.
The other star ingredient in this smoothie is maca, which is a root vegetable grown in high altitudes in South America. Considered an “adaptogen”, it can help the body naturally adapt to stressors like a busy schedule, demanding job, or illness.
It also has a great nutritional profile which includes (in varying amounts) protein, carbohydrates, fat, fibre, minerals and vitamins. It has also been shown to help to naturally balance hormones, including having a protective affect on those transitioning through the menopause, and has a positive effect on energy and mood. So a good reason to make this chocolate protein shake.
Chocolate Protein Shake
Recipe makes 1 serving | Takes 5 minutes to prepare
What You Need
1 cup of organic plant milk (almond/cashew/hazelnut/hempseed)
1 small ripe banana - fresh or frozen
2 dates (use fresh if possible, if they are dry pre-soak first to soften)
Choose from either 1/2 tablespoon of hemp seeds or hemp protein powder,
or 1 tablespoon of tahini (sesame seed paste) or organic peanut butter
or a small handful of walnuts or pumpkin seeds
1 tablespoon of raw cacao powder
1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon powder
Pinch of cayenne pepper
Optional - handful of ice if you prefer it really cold
Optional - 1/2 – 1 tablespoon of Maca powder
Blender – a high speed one would work better, however a normal domestic blender will also work, but will take a little longer
How To Do It
- Add all the ingredients into your blender, and process until the dates have blended and are no longer visible.
- Pour into a glass, or travel cup.
